A Woof / Meow story
Adoption is not a compromise. It is, more often than not, the better story.
Auckland's rescue community is one of the most committed in the country — a network of organisations, volunteers, and foster families doing the unglamorous work of giving animals a second chance. The post-pandemic surge in surrenders has made that work harder. It has also made it more necessary.
Where to Start
Auckland SPCA
Centres in Mangere, Henderson, and the North Shore. Dogs, cats, rabbits, and more. Browse at spca.nz and book an adoption appointment before you visit.

The Dog Rescue Project — Volunteer-run, foster-based, and entirely dedicated to dogs. Their animals live in family homes while they wait — which means they arrive already knowing how to be part of one..Visit The Dog Rescue Project

Lonely Miaow Association — Auckland's longest-running cat rescue, rehoming cats and kittens since 1968. The kind of institution a city should be proud of. Visit lonelymiaow.co.nz
Rescue Pets NZ — An online aggregator pulling listings from shelters and rescues across the country. A useful starting point if you're not sure where to begin. Visit Pet Rescue
What to Expect An application. Sometimes a home check. A meeting. An adoption fee that covers desexing, microchipping, and vaccinations — and saves you the equivalent in initial vet costs. Then the animal comes home, and the adjustment begins. Give it time. It's always worth it.
Upcoming Events The SPCA holds regular adoption days across their Auckland centres. The Dog Rescue Project runs pop-up events — follow their Facebook page for dates. Auckland Council's animal management page lists adoptable dogs in their care.
Good Company. Every animal in a rescue has already survived something. What they need now is somewhere to stay.
