A Woof story

Auckland is, at its core, a coastal city.

Water is never far. Neither are the beaches that make a morning walk feel like something worth getting up for — salt air, open sky, and a dog doing exactly what dogs were made to do.

These are the beaches worth knowing.

Takapuna Beach Auckland dog friendly

Takapuna Beach

One of Auckland's most loved stretches of coastline. Dogs on leash along most of the beach, calm harbour water, golden sand, and Rangitoto sitting on the horizon. Grab a coffee from the strip and take your time.

Orewa Beach dog friendly Auckland

Orewa Beach

Long, sweeping, and less crowded than the central beaches. The Hibiscus Coast at its most generous — wide open space and room to breathe. Dogs on leash, but the scale of it makes that feel beside the point.

Long Bay Regional Park dog friendly

Long Bay Regional Park

A beautiful combination of beach, bush and open parkland. One of Auckland's most complete outdoor spaces — and one that genuinely welcomes dogs.

Muriwai Beach dog friendly Auckland

Muriwai Beach

For the adventurous dog owner, Muriwai on Auckland's wild west coast is an unforgettable experience. Dogs are welcome on the beach (on leash near the gannet colony), and the dramatic black sand and crashing surf make for an epic outing. Note: the surf here is powerful, so keep a close eye on your pup near the water.

Cheltenham Beach Devonport dog friendly

Cheltenham Beach (Devonport)

A sheltered harbour beach with views across to the city. Calm water, a village feel, and the kind of morning that makes the ferry ride worth it.

Maraetai Beach dog friendly AucklandMaraetai Beach

A quieter stretch on the Manukau Harbour, popular with locals who know better than to share it too widely. Relaxed, unhurried, and genuinely beautiful.

A few things worth knowing before you go

Bring fresh water — salt water, in quantity, is not good for dogs. Theirs should come from a bottle.

Check the rules — leash requirements and dog-friendly hours vary by beach and season. Auckland Council's website has the current details.

Rinse off after — salt and sand can irritate skin and paws. A quick rinse is a good habit.

Watch the heat — early morning or evening in summer. Midday on dark sand is not the time.

Leave it as you found it — pick up after your dog. Keep the beaches good for everyone.

Good Company. The tide goes out. The dog runs.
Some mornings are exactly as good as they should be.
