The Winter Edit

The Winter Edit

A Woof / Good Company story

Auckland winters are not dramatic. No snow, no frost, no reason to stay inside.

But the light changes. The parks empty out. The trails through the Waitakere Ranges run quieter, greener, and cooler — which is, for a dog, close to perfect.

Winter in this city is not a season to endure. It's a season to use.

Dog hiking in Waitakere Ranges Auckland Into the Waitakere Ranges

The bush is at its best in winter — lush, quiet, and cool enough for a dog to run without overheating. Stick to dog-friendly tracks and check Auckland Council's current access rules before you go. The waterfalls are worth it.  here

Dog friendly cafes Auckland

Dog-Friendly Cafes

Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Devonport — Auckland's café culture doesn't stop for winter. A puppuccino for them, a flat white for you, and somewhere with outdoor seating that doesn't mind a wet dog.

The Off-Leash Parks

Less crowded in winter, which is reason enough. Pt Chevalier Beach Reserve, Western Springs Park, and Waikowhai Park all offer space, views, and the particular pleasure of a park that isn't shared with half the city.

  • Pt Chevalier Beach Reserve — a popular off-leash area with beach access
  • Western Springs Park — spacious grounds with plenty of room to roam
  • Waikowhai Park — beautiful harbour views and off-leash areas

Indoor dog training AucklandTry a Dog Training Class

Winter is the perfect time to invest in some training with your dog. Many Auckland dog training clubs and schools run indoor or covered classes throughout winter. It's a great way to bond with your dog, keep their mind stimulated, and work on any behaviours you'd like to improve.

The Auckland Domain

On leash, but worth it. Towering trees, open lawns, and a walk that ends in Parnell Village. A reliable winter circuit.

Indoor Days

For the days when even the most committed dog owner draws the line — snuffle mats, slow feeders, hide-and-seek with treats, short training sessions. Mental stimulation tires a dog out as effectively
as a run.

  • Feeders and snuffle mats — great for slowing down fast eaters and providing mental stimulation
  • Hide and seek with treats — hide treats around the house for your dog to find
  • Training sessions — short, fun training sessions tire dogs out mentally
  • Tug and fetch indoors — a hallway or lounge can work for a quick game

A Winter Road Trip

The Coromandel and Northland are quieter in winter, greener, and largely deserted. Many holiday parks are dog-friendly. The beaches are yours.

Dog wearing Barbour coat in Auckland park On Keeping Warm

Auckland winters are mild. But short-haired breeds, small dogs, and older dogs feel the cold. A well-fitted coat makes a morning walk considerably more comfortable for both of you.

Good Company. The city is quieter in winter.
That's not a problem. That's the point.
